It's been almost a year since my last update. I planned on launching a website, but this will take more time then I figured, so let's do this slow blog-thing once more.

People are still wondering about my finger, but that has healed fine. My e-mail is working again, and I'm taking orders. I'm still back on a couple of handfulls, but these will be made as I go along and will hopefully all be made before summer.

I received a lot of fieldreports by users, and small things in my basic sheathdesigns has changed for the better. The corners on the technical kydex sheaths are a bit more rounded, and the backpiece design has a different spacing for the eyelets in order to accomodate the teklok in more positions. I still have to picture all the setups possible with this sheath, but that's something for the next update that will, hopefully, be on my new website to be.

e-mail trouble again

Just a short message to let everybody know what is going on.

My finger has healed well, thanks for all the support. It ate away a lot of time though, and I'm still not taking new orders as my backlog still excists and progress is slow. My guess is that I'll be taking new orders again around July, untill then I'll be working through my backlog.

My e-mail trouble seemed solved in januari, but continued untill late april, where the server released over 1200 e-mails that were kept for months. I can't answer all of them, so please don't be offended if your e-mail, send between mid januari- late april, was left unanswered. But even then the pile is huge, as the numbers of requests are increasing up to 30 e-mails a day for the last 6 weeks. Please be patient if your message isn't replied to soon. All orders on my list will be filled or receive a refund if the wait has been too long.
I'm not sure how to cope with this increasing demand in the future, but I'm sure time will tell.

Fellow knifenut and graphic designer Wouter de Jong (http://sereknivesphotography.blogspot.com/) has designed a logo for Martinsheaths. I incorporated it in my new bussiness card and I'm quite happy with it. In the future my leatherwork will have this logo.

a few weeks ago the Dutch Knife Exhibition was held (http://www.dkeshow.nl/). If you are ever around, please pay a visit, as it is worth it very much. a very good atmosphere, and a wealth of custom and production knives and materials.
One of the knifemakers present is Erik Markman (get a website Erik!) and one of his knive's I had the honour of making sheaths for is the Taurus:

short update and sitrep

Some of you already know, but last week I had a small accident, resulting in a severely cut indexfinger. This needs a couple of weeks to heal which means I can't do leatherwork during that time. I can't apply enough force, and working with water is not a good idea yet. Yesterday I started doing kydex again, and though progres is slow, I finished a sheath. So this week I'll be concentrating on kydex only.

To make up for lost time I'll stop taking new orders for the next 6 weeks or so.

I also still have problems with my provider, and not all e-mails reach me like they should. Sometimes only a few for days, and then the rest all at once. I try to answer them all, but I'm sure I missed some, so if I missed you, please send them again.

Shipping notice:
Since januari 1 all packages over 500 grams shipped to the USA will undergo extra security checks which mean delays in delivery up to 4 weeks.
I understood this is a temporary measure.
Most sheaths are under 500 grams, but with a knife included most are over.
Also shipping rates and rules have changed. The rates for "Signed for" shipping have doubled, but insurance up to € 500,- is included standard now.

H A P P Y N E W Y E A R !!!

I hope this will be a healthy and prosperous year for everyone!!

Most people who have sheaths on order have contacted me after "the crash" and I'm pretty much lined up again. I want to thank you guys so much for your patience, which is really incredible in some cases.

Internet and computer trouble

As a follow up on my last post things have gone really wrong now.
Not only has my provider been screwing around for like 6 weeks, last week my laptop crashed beyond any form of recovery, and I lost all e-mails concerning ongoing and new projects.
My last backup dates 4 weeks back (Yeah.. I know.. I'm a dumbass)

Everybody who hasn't had a reply, please send your e-mail again. I'm back online since yesterday and will start answering mails as from today.

Another thing is that last month I lost my job, my car and my phone, and I had to spend some serious time regrouping. This will mean delays on most excisting orders. To make up I will not take on any new orders during the month december.

I hope you understand..

Last months have been hectic as never before. Custom orders kept pouring in, and for the first time I went over my 8-10 week backlog. Some of you guys are waiting longer then agreed upon and to most of you I allready explained the situation, but I think it's good to do it here also so everybody knows what to expect.

This is what caused delays..
-I received a couple of large orders from our guys who are deployed abroad which ate away a couple of weeks. No need in saying these are prioritized.
-Going from 6 hours of sheathwork a week to 20 hours caused some troubles with my hands. I collected some small cuts and bruises, and working around them without sufficiënt recuperating caused muscle and tendon aches, therefore I had to take it very easy for a couple of weeks.
-Receiving lots of orders at the same time for the same knife. Especially the Bravo-1, RC-3, F-1 and the new Swamprat releases will take longer then expected at first. I only have 1 patternknife of each, and one knife occupies a sheath for 5 days..
-I have always been trying to help the people that send there knife over first, so they don't have to miss their knife very long. Since more and more people are sending their knives to me this is causing delays.
-I do sheathwork for 1 professional knifemaker, Andrew Jordan (http://www.jordanknives.com/) and I agreed on a 3 week deadline with him expecting an avarage of 1 knife every month or so, but this has turned into sometimes 6 or 7 knives a month. In order to serve him as good as possible others suffered. This is not good, and I will reorganize.

Anyway,
I learned to expect the unexpected, and need to work with larger and more flexible windows from now on. I'm very happy most of you guys understand, but if there's someone who I haven't had contact with, that is approaching his 'deadline', please contact me for an update.

a good thing is my hands are getting trained more and more and are slowly turning into vice-like grips with some kind of hardened buffalo skin on them, and I can efficiëntly maintain the 20 hour a week hand labour..

In my last update I said I would try to update the excisting pages, but I gave up on that. The Editor is a bitch to work with, and is clearly not designed for updates later on. Guess I have to find me some webspace and start a website. If you want to find specific work you can use the search my blog feature on top of the page, or the Blog Archive in the lefthand column.

Here's one in leatherlined kydex for a Busse Satin Jack.

It has loads of carry options and is fully teklok and molle compatible. The leather inside is deep waxed, but this needs to be treated as a leather sheath even though It has that kydex 'klack'.

Hi everybody..

It´s been a while..

Instead of doing a regular update, showing my recent work I will concentrate the coming months in updating the excisting pages. Things got scattered around very much, and it's hard to get a decent overview of the models and styles I do.

I hope this will create a better overview as you'll find different mofeld of the same style on the same page. In the left hand column you'll find the links to the different pages.

Recent Sheaths:

Incredible fit and finish on this first knife made by Jurgen Krebbekx from the Netherlands.

It was an honour to build a matching sheath. The inside is lined with signal red kydex.

Extrema Ratio Shrapnell OG

The original sheath is improved and doesn't rattle anymore. They put a piece of foam like stuff in the bottom of the sheath that takes and imobilizes the tip of the knife.. Very nifty.. The sheath does blunt the edge very easily, so I had to make me a new one.

The retentionstrap can be screwed of, and both sheath and backplate take a teklok.

This simple but effective pouch I made for wilderniss guide and instructor Stani Groeneweg: http://www.discoversurvival.com/ .

He works for the Discovery Channel as the survival expert and consultant on the Bear Grylls shows.

His knife is a modified Ontario TAK-1 in D-2 and he uses it on a daily basis in variety of environments. The pouch holds a Fallkniven DC-4 stone.

The sheath has a 0.08" kydex liner, and halftanned outers. Both sheath and pouch have a large drainage hole. There´s a comfortable shaped thumbpush.

New Folder Pouch Concept

I wanted to make a simple pouch that would allow as many carry options as I could think of, and this is it.

The ´backplate´ for beltcarry allows horizontal, vertical and canted carry. It sits very close to the body. With the backplate removed, the holes line up for a teklok or a set of molleloks to secure it flat to a vest.

The halftanned leather is extremely stiff and hard, and will keep it´s shape permanent. The knife locks in place and can´t be shaken out, but is easily drawn onehanded.

This one has no bottom in order to make it as compact as possible, but it can easily be made with a bottom, and-or a flap closure.

Technical Kydex

After doing some Kydex for my own Fälknivens, I decided to dress up some other knives in Plastic. The Shiv came with an extremely shitty sheath, and I decided my Rat Cutlery Knives are worthy of a more customized sheathing system too..

The bracket will take both beltloop or a tek-lok.

I chose leather for the beltloop, as it has the right mix between stiffnes and flexibilitie. Where I find the teklok too stiff in some cases, and nylon webbing is too soft sometimes.

The foldover type of sheath will fit the Maxpedition Single pouch or the Blade-Tech pouch, made by Eagle Industries. The next model will have an adapter plate that takes a Malice Clip to attach a wider model pouch too. This plate could also be made too take molle loks or other systems

This was a good excercise in plastic bending.
Especially the use of the heatgun while forming of details like the thumbpush on the Shiv and the RC-3 sheath was a great experience, and worked out above expectation. Also the setting of the final retention on the RC-4 sheath was very easy..
The trick is to wrap a wet cloth around the sheathed knife, exposing only that part that you want to form. That way the rest of the kydex that is allready shaped well, won't become too hot,and loose it's form.

The sheath is made for the Swamprat M9 LE..
It has a 0.08" kydex liner and an outer of halftanned leather.. It's made along the lines of the Ratweiler pattern, but doesn't have the adjustable retention.

The video is of very poor quality, but nevertheless imo allows for a better view then pics alone..

You'll get a more or less decent view of the retentionstrap and the entrance of the sheath. It also gives an impression of the retention, and how the kydex is molded into the leather..

Kydex for my Fällkniven

I decided to give my own Rubber Handled Falkies a new pair of Plastic Pants..

my A-1

Here's my S-1..

(the colour of the sheath is OD, but the white balance of the camera got off track a bit due to the intense orange background)

The S-1 and the are made of 0.08" kydex and the A-1 of 0.093". The brackets for the loops and loks are made of sturdy 0.125" kydex.

I made the opening assymetrical to make it wider for an easier aiming point

They all have drainage holes.
The different parts are pretty much interchangeable, so there are a lot of carry options.

UPDATE May 2010

In the meantime I stepped away from the assymetrical opening. I found that keeping it symetrical makes it more ambidextrous, and allows for a thumbpush on the spine of the sheath, which allows for a more comfortable and controlled draw.

This one for the Hill S.O.K. has a removable retentionstrap..

This one for the Fällkniven S-1 can be worn horizontally on the belt, or vertical using the loop.

A small leather pouch for a leftie. Lined with soft leather, and a an outer of tough halftanned.
The folder is made by Toni Oostendorp of Eastvillage Knives.

Originaly it's supposed to have a kydex liner (that can be cleaned out this way) but this will work very well too, and is a bit softer on the soft laminated sides of the Fällkniven

The well proven Ratweiler pattern goes very well on the Busse NMSFNO.

Hello everybody..

I've received quite a few requests for the technical sheath, so I'll be very busy the next few months and waitingtime is currently up to 8 weeks.

I invested in some decent setters to do line 24 snaps on certain sheaths. I have also got me a bunch of snaps in black, brass and nickel. They are top-quality, and the only ones really suited for long term every day use.

I also got me some more patterknives, as I received multiple requests for those models, and I like them very much myself. Among them are the new Swamprat M9 LE, the new Busse NMSFNO, the Fällkniven A-1 and the Rat Cutlery RC-3. Most are still underway, but will arrive soon I hope.

I made a new model I’d like to hear your thoughts about..

The Technical Bushcraft Sheath

The idea was to make a sheath that is completely modular and can be set-up differently each time for any specific task. The sheath had to be strong, safe, reliable, weather-resistant and easy to use and maintain in the field. It should fit all kinds accessories and attachements one could need or want for a variety of uses. (paint it black and call it Tactical)

After some try-outs and prototypes I believe this one is good enough to show here.
I only have some crappy pics cause the lighting is dim and it’s freezing cold, but I will make better ones in the near future. It’ll give you the idea for now.

This is the basic sheath:

It has a halftanned leather pouch and a removable kydex liner. a Chicagoscrew secure’s the kydex inside the pouch. On the side there’s a row of eyelets that will fit all kinds of accessories.The kydex is light coloured to make visual inspection easier, and to have a clear aimingpoint when resheathing the knife. The kydex is cut under an angle to have a larger opening for resheating, and to have something to pull on when removing the liner.

Features:
It can be set-up with a large teklok in horizontal, vertical and canted positions.
It can be setup with a beltloop for high, med or low carry.
It'll fit the Blade-Tech molle loks.
It will fit all pouches in the Maxpedition style ‘Single Pouch’ or custom made pouches.
It has a drainage hole and a thumbpush (2010 models)

It has a very slim profile

The firesteelloop can be mounted inside or outside the sheath profile.

It can be carried horizontal on the belt using the loops.

It does show a lot of handle when carried horizontal, making it somewhat handleheavy.
Taking up the toploop like the sheath beneath compensates that.
This one is optimized for horizontal carry.

One pouch could fit multiple liners for different knives.
As an example. One pouch could fit liners for a series of popular knives like the Fällkniven F-1, or Rat Cutlery’s RC-4 + all other knives that, a bit more or less, have the same profile and length.

UPDATE:

a year later this turns out to be one of my most popular models.

After making a lot of these the Technical Bushcraft sheath has evolved a bit further now, and some changes are made.

I don't do the wetformed droploop anymore as it influences retention too much. I now use a kydex backplate that takes either a droploop or a teklok. If you want only leather I can do a loop that fastems to the horizontal loops and could be setup for high and mid carry

another change is the opening of the sheath. Instead of an assymetrical opening I now focus more on having a comfortable thumb push.

I changed the set-up of the eyelets, and made it standard on all my sheaths. It makes for parts to be exchangeble and easy adjustments to other heights of carry..

Here's the new design for the Koster (but this could be almost any knife of the same size)
